It’s Not the Tryptophan

Tryptophan is an amino acid that can only be absorbed on an empty stomach; therefore, the big bird isn’t the cause of our drowsiness on Thanksgiving Day. It’s everything else.

Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar. Whenever we consume something, our blood sugar rises, and then insulin swoops in to lower it. That’s its job. However, whenever we consume something high on the glycemic index, such as potatoes, bread, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and pie, our blood sugar skyrockets; therefore, causing insulin to work harder.

What do you suppose happens when our blood sugar spikes higher than normal, and insulin works overtime?

We crash and burn!

The starch, sugar, and alcohol knocks us down for the count, because tasty toxins bang up our insides. These foods force our insulin to pump like no tomorrow. In fact, when people continue to eat this way on a regular basis, their insulin will eventually deplete, and they become diabetic.

Too much insulin is inflammatory, and inflammation is the root cause of serious illness. When we consume starch and sweets everyday, we open the door to disease and disorders. Common sense tells us to avoid the junk, but addiction is our downfall. And, again, obesity is only a symptom of this aforementioned problem.

Did you know, our body cannot tolerate more than 4-grams of sugar on a daily basis? Yet, the average American consumes over 120-grams per day. Keep in mind: when I say sugar, I mean glucose – so, that would be candy, cake, bread, pasta, cereal, pancakes, waffles, potatoes, etc.

That said, how in the world do we get through the holiday feast?

Simple.

Eat the meat and go for low glycemic vegetables, like leafy greens. 

Avoid the stuffing, cranberry sauce, and anything that is “manufactured” – like marshmallows. If you see marshmallows on the sweet potatoes, turn around!

Go for the real food, low on the glycemic index.

Our Brain on Wheat, Carbs, & Sugar

“Your theories on sugar may not be true.” A notion spoken by a loved one, based on my grandmother’s recent passing away at 90-years-old. She lived, like most Americans do, with a diet heavy on sweets and starch. It’s interesting how many people mistake longevity for health.

90 years is impressive on paper. Sure, my grandmother had a long life. But, she spent the past decade with dementia. If you don’t know what’s going on, who anybody is, and who you are, isn’t that like being dead already? I say that, not to be insensitive, but to make a point.

We seem to always focus on weight loss and longevity, but rarely get informed on everything in between. Everything beyond what the junk food industry and drug-pushers will tell us, via forms of paid and swayed media.

Many are easily brainwashed to believe what they are told, or were raised believing. “They say this” and “they say that.” But, does anyone even bother to question it and do their homework? I dare everyone to peek behind the curtain.

I’ve been doing my homework since the late 2000s. I learned something new about true health science every single day. Why? Because I was obese, pre-diabetic, had epilepsy, and my heart was about to explode. I wanted to live. But, I also wanted to learn.

What did I learn?

I learned that we’ve been lied to. I learned that grains, wheat, corn, starch, and sugar make us slow, sick, and stupid; that it shrinks our brain, expands our belly, and destroys our heart. I learned that dietary fat (especially Omega-3/DHA) are what we need to survive and have healthy brains, as well as a healthy heart (in conjunction with stress management). I learned that cholesterol is the hero, not the villain, and how LOW cholesterol is fatal and will cause brain damage. In fact, “bad” cholesterol only occurs when sugar/starch/glucose attaches itself to cells, causing all sorts of issues.

We’ve been duped by the big cereal companies, and Big Pharma has profited on our “self-induced” damage. I mean, why not? There’s no money in healthy people – let them consume slow poisons and suffer in their golden years.

So, how do we not be slow, sick, and stupid?

Avoid sugar & starch like the plague! Adjust your lifestyle for the better.

How do we prevent brain disease, including A.D.D., A.D.H.D., unexplained depression, unexplained anxiety, and more?

Avoid sugar & starch like the plague, and start eating that fatty fish (omega-3). Adjust your lifestyle for the better.

It’s not about obesity. That’s just a symptom from all of the above. If you’re overweight, don’t look at the treadmill, look at your plate. What’s on it? Pancakes or eggs? Potatoes or fish? Pasta or salad? Oatmeal or beef?

We pay for it now or we pay for it later. But, is it worth it? Just because you “feel fine” now, doesn’t mean you’re not on the slow road to suffering later.

Food is nourishment, not entertainment.

Personally, my goal is to stay out of the nursing home and keep my mind sharp till the end credits roll, so to speak. It’s not so much genetics as it is what you consume your entire life. It’s a gamble. Your genes may or may not be strong enough to handle all the damaging, delicious foods out there.

Look: the root cause of 80% of disease is due to constant inflammation. Logic suggests that if we remove inflammatory food, drink, and stress, we’ll have a better immune system to manage/prevent unnecessary sickness.

Is that 5-second rush of dopamine, from the bagel or cake, really worth cellular damage? “Everything in moderation,” my ass!

You are what you eat, but do you know what you’re eating?

I highly recommend you read the book Grain Brain by Dr. David Perlmutter, a board-certified neurologist. It will make everything I wrote above make sense.
